The ATHENA Jean Monnet Chair will host Francesca Albanese, who will analyse Israel’s violations of international law in their present and historical context and examine the responsibilities of third-States vis-à-vis Israel’s attacks on Gaza, with a focus on the EU Member States.
She will highlight the findings of her report released on 1 October 2024 and discuss accountability mechanisms at both domestic and international levels.

About Francesca Albanese
Francesca Albanese (she/her) is the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the occupied Palestinian territories (oPt) since 1967, an Affiliate Scholar at the Institute for the Study of International Migration at Georgetown University, as well as a Senior Advisor on Migration and Forced Displacement for the Arab Renaissance for Democracy and Development (ARDD).
Ms. Albanese graduated with honors from the University of Pisa with a law degree, and completed her Master of Laws in human rights from SOAS University of London. She worked for a decade as a human rights expert in various locales for the United Nations, including the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and the UN Relief and Work Agency for Palestine Refugees.
